Frequently Asked Questions
So, what exactly is DramaRama?
DramaRama is a nonprofit organization, dedicated to the performing arts of Greater New Orleans. Currently, our major activities revolve around an annual theatre festival held jointly at the Contemporary Arts Center and the Louisiana Children's Museum under the names of DramaRama and DramaRama Junior, respectively. In both venues, we strive to give New Orleans' many performing artists a place to show their new work and to network with their peers. As you've probably guessed, children's theatre shows at DramaRama Junior; everything else goes to the CAC.
DramaRama began as the brainchild of Kenneth Raphael, Denise Chetta, and Jan Villarrubia, who brazenly approached the Contemporary Arts Center in 1992 and proposed a weekend-long theatre festival that would fill every square inch of public space in the building--including the garage. After the CAC agreed to host the event, Kenneth, Denise, and Jan filed the necessary paperwork to establish themselves as a 501(c)(3), then began pulling together DramaRama1, which premiered in the fall of 1993.
But wait--I thought you were part of the CAC....
Well, no, not really. We've developed a very strong partnership with the CAC--which is only natural, since we're both devoted to contemporary art--and we hope to keep the festival anchored at the CAC for the forseeable future, but technically, we're a separate organization.
How can I show my work at DramaRama?
Calls for Entries are mailed out about six months prior to DramaRama. They're sent to all previous DramaRama participants, as well as the theatre portion of the CAC mailing list. You can download an application for DramaRama by visiting the info page. Or, if you'd rather receive an application by mail, call the CAC (504 528 3800) and ask to be put on their theatre mailing list.
Please note: DramaRama is a presenting organization, meaning that DramaRama does not produce work itself; rather, we present artists and companies in an evening of showcase-format performance. In other words, we provide artists with a space in which to present their work to the public. We do not hire directors, actors, or crew for any production. We cannot, therefore, simply accept manuscripts: if you wish to participate in DramaRama, you must cast, direct, and tech your piece on your own.
Which begs the question: how do we contact you?
